Siberian Husky Standard

The Siberian Husky is a medium, athletic working dog built to travel far with ease. You’ll notice the light, efficient way they move, the erect ears, and the brush tail that hint at their northern heritage. A correct Husky is balanced in every way—never heavy or coarse, never fine or fragile—showing an effortless blend of power, speed, and endurance. The outline should feel clean and purposeful, with muscle that’s firm but not bulky and a free, graceful way of going.

Balance and moderation are key. Males typically stand 21–23½ inches and weigh 45–60 pounds; females are slightly smaller at 20–22 inches and 35–50 pounds. The body is a touch longer than tall with a straight, strong back and a deep—but not broad—chest that allows the front to reach freely. The neck is proudly arched when standing and extends forward on the move. The tail is a well-furred fox-brush, usually carried in a soft sickle curve when alert and trailing naturally at rest. Feet are compact and oval, with thick pads that speak to the breed’s purpose as a distance traveler.

Expression should be keen and friendly—often with a hint of mischief. Eyes are almond-shaped and may be brown, blue, one of each, or parti-colored. Medium, triangular ears sit high and are strongly erect. The head is clean, never clumsy or chiseled fine, with a medium muzzle that tapers gently and a correct scissors bite. The coat is double and of medium length: a dense, soft undercoat supporting a smooth-lying outer coat. Trimming is limited to feet and whiskers for neatness; the natural outline elsewhere should be preserved. All allowable colors—from black through gray, agouti, sable, red, and white—are seen in the breed, often with striking facial markings.

A Husky should look like it could trot all day—and move like it, too. On a loose lead at a moderate trot, the topline stays level while the front reaches and the rear drives. As speed increases, the legs naturally angle inward so that the feet land under the body’s center line, minimizing wasted motion. In character, the Siberian Husky is friendly, gentle, and outgoing—highly intelligent and eager to work, but not a guard dog. Puppies can be playful comedians; mature dogs often carry a calm, dignified air. Above all, the best Huskies pair correct structure with willing, biddable temperaments that make them a joy to live and work with.
