Getting a Puppy from Thistle Hill

Finding the right puppy is not something we rush. The families who come to Thistle Hill are looking for more than a dog, and they deserve more than a transaction. This page walks you through how the process works and what to expect from us.

We are invested in every placement we make. That investment starts long before a puppy is born, and continues for the lifetime of your dog.

The Best Thing You Can Do For Your Dog Is Happening Now

Most people fall in love with a face before they ever think about where that puppy came from. An Instagram reel, a photo on a website, a friend's dog at the park. Suddenly they are searching for a puppy without knowing what to look for in a breeder.

But the decisions that shape your dog's health, temperament, and quality of life are made long before you ever meet them. They are made by the breeder.

A dog from health tested parents, raised with intention from day one, starts life with advantages that matter for the next ten to fifteen years. Health testing does not eliminate every risk, but it dramatically reduces the chances of preventable conditions that break hearts and strain budgets. Early development work builds a nervous system ready for the world. Careful placement means your puppy was matched to your household, not just assigned to the next name on a list.

For a family that will love that dog like a member of the household, those decisions are worth seeking out. The breeder you choose before you ever see a puppy is one of the most important choices you will make for your dog.

Stay Connected

Approved families hear first when a litter is planned. We stay in touch as plans develop, share updates as pregnancies are confirmed, and make sure you are never left wondering where things stand.

The Match

When a litter arrives, we watch. Personalities emerge over weeks, not days, and we take that time to observe. Every puppy is matched to the family where they are most likely to thrive. Temperament drives the decision.

Placement Philosophy

By the time puppies are ready to go home, most families have watched weeks of updates, fallen in love with at least one face, and convinced themselves they will just know when they meet them in person. That feeling is real. It is also only part of the picture.

What daily observation over eight weeks actually reveals is something a single visit, a video call, or a perfectly timed photo cannot. Which puppies push boundaries and which ones defer. Who leads and who follows. Which ones will thrive with an experienced handler and which ones are built for a busy family home. That information is what drives every placement decision we make.

This is a collaborative process. Families share what their household looks like and what they are hoping for. We share what we are seeing as personalities develop. When the time comes, we make the match together, with weeks of observation informing the conversation. The goal is simple: every family gets the puppy that is actually right for them, not just the one they fell for in a photo.

Pricing

The price of a Thistle Hill puppy reflects what went into producing them. Health testing, early development, intentional pairing, and ongoing support do not happen without real investment. We think that investment is worth it. We think you will too.

Current placements range from $2,800 to $4,400 depending on the breeding.

Logistics

Pickup is more than a handoff. That final meeting is an opportunity to go through your puppy's health records and care binder together, answer any last questions, and send your new family member home with confidence. We have placed puppies across the country, from Hawaii to New York and many states in between, and we make the logistics work.

For local and regional families we arrange a meeting at a convenient location. For families flying in, we are close to the Sacramento area and can coordinate airport pickup and delivery. We do not ship puppies as cargo. Every Thistle Hill puppy travels to their new home with a person, not alone in a cargo hold.
